Treasure Island is the Prairie Island Indian Community's resort at Welch, on the Mississippi south-east of the Twin Cities. It opened in 1984 and rates 3.9 from more than 17,700 Google reviewers — one of the largest review bases of any casino in Minnesota.
It is the most complete resort in the state after Mystic Lake, and by some measures more of a holiday destination than a casino.
What's on the floor
1,800 slot machines and 40 gaming tables, plus a casino VIP room.
The range of game types is unusually wide: live dealer blackjack, poker and other table games sit alongside video roulette, video blackjack and keno, and there is a bingo hall as well. Very few Minnesota properties cover all of those under one roof.
Check the venue's site for the current poker and bingo schedules — both run on set calendars rather than continuously.
The hotel and the waterpark
The hotel runs 788 rooms across three towers, making it the second-largest hotel in Minnesota — larger than anything in downtown Minneapolis or Saint Paul.
The reason it can fill them is The Lagoon, an indoor waterpark on site, alongside the Wave Spa. A casino with a waterpark is a genuinely different proposition from a casino with a pool: families book here for the water and the parents play in the evening, which is why the property sustains that room count in a town of a few hundred people.
There is also a marina on the Mississippi and the Spirit of the Water, plus an RV park.
Entertainment and dining
The Treasure Island Amphitheater seats up to 16,000 — one of the larger outdoor venues in the state — and the indoor Island Event Center holds around 2,800. Between them the property runs a substantial touring calendar.
Island Xtreme Bowl covers bowling and the Cyber Quest arcade covers the younger end. There are four restaurants and a full-service spa.
Tips before you go
The casino is open 24 hours, seven days a week.
Minnesota tribal casinos generally admit players from 18, though individual properties set their own rules and areas serving alcohol are often 21-plus. Confirm with the venue before travelling.
Welch is about forty-five minutes south-east of the Twin Cities near Red Wing, in the Mississippi bluff country. Summer weekends and amphitheater show nights are the busy times; book the hotel and the waterpark well ahead for both.
If you are travelling with children, this and Grand Casino Mille Lacs are the two Minnesota properties genuinely built for it — and Treasure Island is the one with the waterpark.
Nearby alternatives
North-west, Little Six Casino and Mystic Lake Casino Hotel at Prior Lake are the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community's properties. North on I-35, Grand Casino Hinckley is the nearest large floor towards Duluth.
