Minnesota Casino Hotels Compared: 788 Rooms at Welch, 60 Lake Suites at Warroad [2026]

The second-largest hotel in Minnesota is not in Minneapolis or Saint Paul. It is at Welch, a village on the Mississippi south-east of the Twin Cities, attached to a tribal casino, and it runs 788 rooms across three towers. That single fact is the best way into this comparison, because Minnesota's casino accommodation is far larger, far more varied and far more rural than most visitors expect. We checked the room counts and amenity lists on every venue page on this site in September 2026 and sorted them.

Every Minnesota casino hotel by size

Black Bear Casino Resort at Carlton belongs in this list too. Our venue page records a 12-storey tower, one of the taller buildings between Duluth and the Twin Cities, alongside a golf course and a 1,900-seat concert venue, but it does not carry a published room count, so we have left the number out rather than estimate it.

The three with no bed at all

Worth knowing before you plan a night. Little Six at Prior Lake, White Oak at Deer River and Fond-du-Luth in downtown Duluth have no accommodation. Little Six sends you to Mystic Lake, a few minutes away under the same Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community ownership. White Oak sends you half an hour west to Cedar Lakes. Fond-du-Luth is the interesting one: it has no rooms because it does not need any, sitting inside a 1986 conversion of the former Sears and Roebuck building on Superior Street, walkable from Duluth's own downtown hotels and Canal Park.

Treasure Island is a holiday, not an evening

Prairie Island Indian Community's resort at Welch opened in 1984 and now carries one of the largest review bases of any casino in the state. The floor is 1,800 slot machines and 40 gaming tables with a VIP room, but the hotel is the story: 788 rooms across three towers, larger than anything in either downtown, plus an indoor waterpark, a spa, bowling and an amphitheatre. We rate it the best choice in Minnesota for a family weekend, and it is a better fit than Mystic Lake for anyone travelling with children who are nowhere near gaming age. Welch is about forty-five minutes south-east of the Twin Cities in the Mississippi bluff country; book well ahead for summer weekends and show nights. Our Treasure Island review has the rest.

The rural giants

Two properties are startling relative to their surroundings. Grand Casino Mille Lacs at Onamia runs 494 rooms beside Lake Mille Lacs, with an oversized pool, a 20-person Jacuzzi and a fitness centre; Onamia is roughly two hours north of the Twin Cities, which puts it beyond day-trip range, and 494 rooms fills fast during the walleye opener. Shooting Star at Mahnomen runs 386 rooms and a spa in a town of about 1,200 people, drawing from Fargo, Moorhead and the whole north-west quadrant.

Jackpot Junction at Morton is the third of this group and the most unusual: 379 rooms plus a 40-space RV park, and a full championship golf course that opened in 2000 in the Minnesota River valley, which is the reason a good share of its summer guests book at all. The floor there runs 1,250 video slot machines with denominations from a cent up to $25.

The two worth travelling for

Prairie's Edge at Granite Falls has more than 160 rooms and suites with indoor and wading pools, a hot tub, a sauna and a fitness centre, and then adds an RV park, tent sites and a tee-pee rental. That range of accommodation is close to unmatched at any casino anywhere, and it explains why summer traffic there runs heavier than a 1,000-machine floor would predict. It also holds one of the better Google ratings in the state.

Cedar Lakes at Cass Lake is worth a mention here for a different reason. Its 100 rooms, brewpub, arcade and indoor pool are newer than almost anyone realises: the Leech Lake Band closed its Palace Casino Hotel on 22 July 2019 and opened Cedar Lakes at a new site three weeks later, on 8 August 2019, in a build reported at roughly $50 million. The search demand still carries over from the old name.

Seven Clans Warroad is the other one worth travelling for. Sixty rooms, every one of them a suite, every one facing Lake of the Woods with its own balcony, plus 24-hour fitness and a spa and jacuzzi. The floor behind it is ordinary at just over 470 machines, four blackjack tables and two poker tables. Nobody drives to the Canadian border for that floor. They drive for a balcony over one of the great freshwater lakes of North America at casino-hotel prices, and on that measure the property has no competition in the state.
