South of the Twin Cities, Minnesota's casino map thins to three resorts, and they split neatly in two. Jackpot Junction at Morton and Prairie's Edge at Granite Falls sit in the Minnesota River valley out west, run by the Lower Sioux and Upper Sioux communities. Treasure Island at Welch sits alone on the Mississippi to the east. Here is the detail most visitors miss: none of the three lists a live roulette wheel. Prairie's Edge spreads virtual roulette, Treasure Island has video roulette, and Jackpot Junction's tables centre on blackjack. If a spinning wheel with a dealer is the point of your trip, plan accordingly. Everything below comes from our individual venue pages.

All three run their gaming floors 24 hours a day.

Jackpot Junction, Morton

The Lower Sioux Indian Community opened Jackpot Junction in 1984 on the south bank of the Minnesota River in Redwood County, and has run it ever since. It is the biggest gaming property in the south-west by a wide margin. The floor is machine-heavy: 1,250 video slots with denominations from a cent to $25, alongside a blackjack-led table offering.

Bingo is the local draw. The hall seats 250, runs regular and matinee sessions, and twice a year stages large bingo events that pull players from well beyond Redwood County. Check the calendar if that is your game.

Outside, the Dacotah Ridge Golf Club opened in 2000 as a full championship layout in the river valley, with the Wabasha Creek Restaurant at the course. Back at the casino, the 276-seat Dacotah Restaurant, the Seasons Buffet and a 2Go kiosk cover food. Morton is about two hours west of the Twin Cities, so this is an overnight trip.

Prairie's Edge, Granite Falls

Three miles south of Granite Falls on the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, the Upper Sioux Community's resort holds the best Google rating of the southern three. Its 1,000 slots share the floor with live blackjack, video keno and the virtual roulette mentioned above, so the cards are dealt by a person and the wheel is a machine.

The reason to come is the campground. Alongside a hotel of more than 160 rooms and suites, the property runs a 55-unit RV park with pull-through and back-in sites and full hookups, rustic tent areas and a tee-pee you can rent. A wading pool and indoor pool signal that families are expected. Food runs from the Meadows Restaurant and Buffet to the Firefly Lounge and a deli open around the clock. Granite Falls is roughly two and a half hours west of the metro; book the tee-pee early in summer.

Treasure Island, Welch

The Prairie Island Indian Community's resort near Red Wing also opened in 1984, which makes it Jackpot Junction's exact contemporary. The two have grown in very different directions. Treasure Island is the only southern floor whose page lists live poker, and its game list is the widest in the region: live blackjack and other table games, a VIP room, video roulette, video blackjack, keno and a bingo hall, across 1,800 machines and 40 tables.

Its non-gaming side is on another scale entirely. An outdoor amphitheater holds up to 16,000, the indoor Island Event Center around 2,800, and there is bowling, an arcade, a marina on the Mississippi, the Wave Spa and The Lagoon indoor waterpark. It is roughly forty-five minutes south-east of the Twin Cities in bluff country.

And the two at Prior Lake

Mystic Lake and Little Six, both run by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community at Prior Lake, sit on the south-west edge of the metro and are covered in our guide to casinos near Minneapolis.

Choosing between them

  • Poker or the widest range of games: Treasure Island.
  • Golf with your gaming: Jackpot Junction.
  • Camping, or the best-rated floor in the south: Prairie's Edge.
  • Bingo: Jackpot Junction and Treasure Island both run halls; check schedules first, as sessions are set rather than continuous.

Minnesota permits casinos only on tribal land, and the state has no sports betting, so these resorts are the in-person options. Our pages describe Minnesota tribal casinos as generally admitting players from 18, with alcohol areas often 21-plus; confirm with the venue.
